This is your Boat Captain speaking
It’s pretty much been a year of upheaval. To get the year going the Mid North Coast Branch decided they no longer wished to be host to the North Coast Boat Series which meant a change to administrative arrangements with the series now being hosted by the Far North Coast Branch.
The Club was pleased to welcome its first representative Open Men’s crew in many, many years with “The Rebels” crew of Brendan Ratcliff, Brent Russo, Morgan McDonough, Nathan Down and swept by Brook Down. For a new crew the boys were very competitive in the North Coast Boat Series and have great promise. We hope they stick at it.
Round 1 of the Boat Series was held at Minnie Water on 2 November, followed by the Coffs Harbour Boatie Bash with rounds 3 and 4 held at Scotts Head on 7 and 8 December. The rounds at Scotts Head combined the North Coast with the Central Coast (Streets) series and again the organisation of our carnival along with the good conditions made it the premier local event of the season.
Thank you to all of our volunteers who provided assistance with setting up, water safety, first aid, catering and beach management. The rowing fraternity on the east coast do acknowledge we put on a great carnival.
The Reserves Crew of Dave Walsh, Ollie Walshe, Todd Johnson and Rob Rathborne and swept by the legendary Mookai got the year started at Minnie Water and Scotts Head.
The ageing 240 year crew of Butch Laverty, Steve Russo, Mike Coulter and Rick Andrews and with Mookai as sweep put aside aches and pains to go around again. But in February the crew suddenly got younger when Butch was hit by the proverbial truck and Rob Rathborne jumped into the vacant spot.
The NSW Championships were held but courtesy of COVID-19 everything started to quickly unravel in the new calendar year.
So looking ahead and COVID permitting I’m hoping the Open Men’s crew will go round again. Butch is back and is organising a crew. The 240 year crew which is now 220 years has started some boat training. It would be good to see the Reserves back.
For anyone else who would like a row now is the time to buddy up. A bronze medallion but no experience is required. In my crew alone there are 5 people who will tell you how the row. Let me know if you want the best time getting fit, catching waves and having a laugh.
Again COVID permitting the combined North Coast and Central Coast boat series carnival will be held at Scotts Head on 5 and 6 December 2020. All the best for the year to come.
